2024 was always going to be a crucial year for Giancarlo Stanton after last season. 2023 was, by any measure, was the worst year of his career. He slashed just .191/.275/.420 in 415 plate appearances and 101 games. He posted just an 87 OPS+. He whiffed at an eye-watering 34.1 percent rate—and 44.6 percent of sliders alone. He clearly couldn’t catch up with the fastball last year, either.

Headed into 2024, the expectations have been lowered for Stanton, for both good and bad reasons. It’s never a good sign when your general manager says to the media that injuries are a part of your game. G’s Yankees tenure has been marred by injuries keeping him off the field. In addition to our expectation of injury, with the additions of Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo, an expected sophomore bump from Anthony Volpe, a return from a concussion by Anthony Rizzo, Aaron Judge full healthy, and even the emergence of Jasson Domínguez, Stanton now shoulders a smaller offensive burden.
