Sunderland AFC have secured the long-term future of one of the most important and influential figures in their squad, Luke O’Nien.

The experienced defender has become a key part of the Black Cats’ dressing room since joining the club in 2018, developing into a respected leader and one of the most recognisable faces at the Stadium of Light. O’Nien has made more than 300 appearances for Sunderland, underlining his remarkable consistency and importance to the club.

O’Nien’s leadership, versatility and commitment have made him a fan favourite. Whether operating at centre-back or filling in elsewhere across the defence, the 31-year-old has repeatedly shown his willingness to put the team’s needs first.

His importance to Sunderland goes beyond performances on the pitch. Supporters affectionately regard him as “Mr Sunderland”, while his connection with the city has grown enormously during his time on Wearside. His contribution was recognised in July 2026 when he received an Honorary Doctorate of Sport from the University of Sunderland.

The Black Cats previously extended O’Nien’s contract in August 2025, with his current deal running until June 2027.

For Sunderland supporters, keeping a player with O’Nien’s experience, character and leadership represents an important statement. As the club continues its Premier League journey, his presence could prove invaluable both on the pitch and inside the dressing room.

Luke O’Nien stays. The Black Cats have kept one of their most important leaders. DEAL ACCEPTED! 🔴⚪🖤
