The Los Angeles Chargers have secured quarterback Taylor Heinicke for the upcoming season, agreeing to a one-year contract extension worth up to $6.2 million. This move underscores the Chargers’ commitment to bolstering their quarterback depth behind starter Justin Herbert.
Heinicke, 31, was initially acquired by the Chargers in August 2024 through a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, where the team exchanged a conditional 2025 sixth-round draft pick based on playing time. In his NFL career, Heinicke has appeared in 38 games, starting 29, and has amassed 6,635 passing yards with 39 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.
Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has expressed confidence in Heinicke’s abilities, stating, “I like him and his body of work. When he quarterbacks a team, they are competitive. He throws with good accuracy and plays his game.” This extension ensures that the Chargers have a seasoned and reliable backup, providing stability and experience to the quarterback position for the 2025 season.
