ESPN VARIFIELD NEWS: Ndamukong Suh Returns to Nebraska Cornhuskers as Senior Coaching Advisor
In a monumental homecoming that has electrified the Nebraska Cornhuskers football program and its passionate fan base, former NFL star and Nebraska legend Ndamukong Suh has officially returned to his alma mater as a Senior Coaching Advisor.
The announcement was made Sunday morning by Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts and Head Coach Matt Rhule during a press conference at Memorial Stadium. Suh, who played defensive tackle for Nebraska from 2005 to 2009 and earned unanimous All-American honors in his final season, will now take on a critical off-field leadership role with the program.
“Coming back to Nebraska isn’t just about football,” Suh said. “It’s about giving back to the place that shaped me — as a player, as a man, and as a leader. I’m here to help this new generation of Huskers find greatness on and off the field.”
From Huskers Legend to NFL Star and Back
Suh, who was selected second overall by the Detroit Lions in the 2010 NFL Draft, went on to have a stellar career in the NFL, playing for the Lions, Dolphins, Rams, Buccaneers, and Eagles. A five-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro, Suh was known for his physical dominance, intelligence, and relentless motor on the defensive line.
But long before his NFL stardom, Suh was a force of nature in Lincoln — his 2009 campaign is still considered one of the greatest seasons ever by a college defensive player. His performance in the 2009 Big 12 Championship Game, where he recorded 4.5 sacks against Texas, remains legendary.
A Mentor Role with a Mission
In his new role as Senior Coaching Advisor, Suh will focus on developing the team’s defensive linemen, mentoring student-athletes, and serving as a bridge between the players and coaching staff. Coach Matt Rhule praised the hire, calling Suh “a generational leader.”
“We’re not just bringing in a Hall of Fame-caliber talent,” Rhule said. “We’re bringing in a voice the players trust. Someone who’s been where they want to go — and who still bleeds scarlet and cream.”
Suh will also participate in recruiting, alumni engagement, and community outreach efforts, helping elevate the Huskers’ brand on a national level.
A Roaring Reception in Lincoln
The reaction across Nebraska was swift and emotional. Social media flooded with highlights from Suh’s college career, and #WelcomeHomeSuh began trending just minutes after the announcement.
Former teammates, coaches, and fans shared their excitement and gratitude for his return. One fan posted on X, “When you bring legends back home, greatness follows. Suh is going to change everything.”
Looking to the Future
Now entering a new chapter, Suh says his motivation comes from a desire to see the Huskers rise again.
“Nebraska gave me the tools to succeed. Now it’s time for me to help give back, to help these young men write their own history. We’ve got unfinished business in Lincoln.”
With Suh back in Lincoln, the Nebraska Cornhuskers are not only bringing home a football icon — they’re reigniting the spirit of dominance that once defined them.
