Women’s basketball coach not to return next season, University of Nebraska Omaha says

Omaha, NE — In a surprising development, the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) announced today that head women’s basketball coach Tamara “Tami” Preston will not return for the 2025–2026 season. The decision comes after what school officials described as a “mutual agreement” between Preston and the university following a rollercoaster season filled with drama both on and off the court.

A Season of Surprises

Preston, who was hired in 2021, led the Mavericks through four seasons marked by ambitious recruiting, a fast-paced offense, and one of the most animated coaching styles in the Summit League. Though her record stood at 58–62, her impact went beyond the scoreboard.

“Coach Preston brought fire, energy, and a unique passion to our women’s program,” said Athletic Director Gene Alford. “But after long discussions, we’ve decided to move in a new direction to meet the evolving goals of our department.”

Sources close to the team cited tensions with assistant coaches and an infamous midseason press conference — during which Preston challenged rival coach Marlene Finster to a game of one-on-one — as part of the internal pressure that led to the change.

Players React

Senior guard Jaya Thompson tweeted shortly after the news broke:

“I may have hated 6 AM conditioning, but I loved every moment Coach P pushed us to be better. She changed our lives.”

Several team members have reportedly considered entering the transfer portal in the wake of Preston’s departure, though the university is working to provide stability during the transition.

The Meme That Made Headlines

Preston also went viral earlier this year after storming onto the court in fuzzy panda slippers during a snow-delayed game against South Dakota State. The photo became a meme sensation, with the hashtag #PandaPowerPlays trending nationally.

Despite the public’s fondness for her antics, university insiders noted a desire for a coach who could “balance personality with postseason results.”

What’s Next for UNO?

The university plans to launch a national search immediately, with hopes of hiring a new coach before the summer recruiting window opens. Rumored candidates include:

  • Assistant coach Carla DuVall, credited with building the team’s defense

  • Former Creighton standout Lisa Ramirez

  • A mysterious overseas coach known only by the nickname “Coach Z”

Preston has not yet announced her next move, though in a statement released through her agent, she said:

“I’ll always love Omaha. This program meant the world to me. But it’s time for a new chapter — possibly one involving less whistle-blowing and more writing.”

Rumors are already swirling that Preston may be penning a memoir titled Full Court Chaos.
