Daren Julius Garvey Sammy, the newly appointed head coach of the West Indies men’s cricket team, has broken his silence following the announcement of his new three-year contract extension. The former West Indies cricket captain, renowned for his leadership on the field, was confirmed as the head coach for the next three years by Cricket West Indies (CWI), marking the beginning of a new chapter for both Sammy and the team.
In an emotional statement, Sammy expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and reflected on his journey from player to coach. “It’s an incredible honor to be entrusted with the responsibility of coaching the West Indies team. As a player, I always believed in the potential of our team, and now, as a coach, I am even more convinced that the best is yet to come,” Sammy said.
Having played a key role in the West Indies’ T20 success, Sammy’s leadership on the field was instrumental in guiding the team to victory in the 2012 and 2016 ICC World T20 tournaments. His transition from player to coach has been closely watched by fans, and with his new three-year contract, Sammy is ready to bring a fresh perspective and renewed energy to the squad.
In his first address as head coach under the new contract, Sammy acknowledged the challenges ahead but was confident that the team’s potential would shine through with the right guidance. “We have a lot of young talent coming through, and it’s important that we provide them with the right environment to grow and thrive,” Sammy said. “Our goal is to bring back the pride and passion that West Indies cricket is known for. It’s about more than just winning; it’s about instilling a sense of purpose and belief in every player.”
While the West Indies team has faced some struggles in recent years, particularly in Test and ODI cricket, Sammy remains optimistic. “We will take it one step at a time, but I am confident that with the right mindset, we can rebuild and restore the West Indies to the level of excellence they are known for,” he added.
The CWI board, led by President Ricky Skerritt, expressed strong support for Sammy’s appointment. “Daren brings a unique combination of passion, experience, and leadership to the role,” Skerritt said. “We are excited to see where he can take the team over the next few years.”
As Sammy prepares for the upcoming series and tournaments, his leadership will be key in reviving the fortunes of the West Indies team. Fans are hopeful that under his guidance, the team will soon return to its former glory.
