The Pacific Tigers men’s basketball program is reeling from heartbreaking news as head coach Dave Smart and associate head coach Leonard Perry were involved in a serious car accident Wednesday afternoon while en route to a recruiting visit in Northern California.
The accident occurred on Interstate 5 near Lodi, according to the California Highway Patrol, during heavy rain and limited visibility. The vehicle, a black SUV driven by Smart, reportedly lost control and collided with a guardrail before being struck by a commercial truck.
Emergency responders arrived within minutes and airlifted both coaches to San Joaquin General Hospital, where they were treated for severe injuries. As of this morning, hospital officials confirmed that Leonard Perry is in critical condition, while Dave Smart remains in serious but stable condition.
🚨 Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident, citing wet road conditions, limited traction, and possible hydroplaning as contributing factors. The truck driver involved in the collision is cooperating fully with officials and has not been charged.
“This was a tragic, weather-related accident,” said CHP spokesperson Officer Ramirez. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families at this time.”
🏀 Basketball World in Shock
The accident has sent shockwaves through the college basketball community, with coaches, players, and fans sending messages of support from around the country.

Teams across the West Coast Conference paused practices for a moment of silence Thursday afternoon, and schools such as Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s, and Pepperdine sent public messages of support.
🙏 A Legacy of Leadership
Dave Smart, a highly respected figure in Canadian basketball, joined the Pacific Tigers in 2023, bringing a championship pedigree and fierce commitment to player development. Leonard Perry, a former head coach at Idaho and long-time assistant at Pacific, is known for his deep roots in the community and mentoring leadership.
Together, the two had been working to rebuild the Tigers into a competitive force, with a strong 2025 recruiting class already taking shape — the very reason for their travel when the accident occurred.
“They were doing what they love — working for the program, shaping young lives,” said one Pacific Athletics staff member. “That makes this even harder.”
📢 University Support and Next Steps
The university has canceled all men’s basketball team activities through the end of the week and is offering grief counseling and mental health resources for players and staff.
A candlelight vigil is being planned for the university commons area on Friday evening at 7 PM, open to all students, staff, alumni, and fans.
