In a horrific and chaotic scene, multiple explosions and fires erupted along the Boston Marathon route, leaving dozens of runners and spectators injured and several dead.
The explosions occurred shortly before 1:00 PM, near the finish line of the marathon, where thousands of runners and spectators were gathered. Witnesses described the scene as “apocalyptic,” with flames and smoke billowing into the air, and people running for their lives.
“It was like a war zone,” said one witness. “I saw people with severe injuries, including burns and broken limbs. It was a horrific scene.”
Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, and began evacuating the area and treating the injured. Multiple ambulances and fire trucks were dispatched to the scene, and a triage center was set up to treat the wounded.
The cause of the explosions is still unknown, but authorities say they are investigating the incident as a possible act of terrorism.
“We are working to determine the cause of the explosions, and to identify those responsible,” said Boston Police Commissioner, William Evans. “We urge everyone to remain calm and to follow the instructions of emergency responders.”
The Boston Marathon has been cancelled, and the area around the finish line has been cordoned off. The FBI and ATF are assisting in the investigation.
