O’Connell, who led the team to a 34–17 regular season record and captured the 2024 AP NFL Coach of the Year award, cited “personal and professional reasons” for his departure. In an emotional statement, he thanked the organization, players, and fans, saying:
“Minnesota has been more than just a job — it’s been a family. This decision wasn’t easy, but I believe the timing is right for both me and the team.”
Zimmer, now 69, coached the Vikings from 2014 to 2021, amassing a 72–56–1 record and guiding the team to three playoff appearances, including the 2017 NFC Championship Game. Known for his defensive genius and fiery leadership, Zimmer’s return has already sparked excitement among the fanbase.
General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah called Zimmer’s comeback a “stabilizing move” for a team with playoff aspirations.
“Mike understands the culture, the locker room, and what it takes to win here. His experience will be a huge asset,” Adofo-Mensah said.
Fans can expect Zimmer to work closely with the coaching staff, focusing on defensive schemes and player development, while the organization searches for a permanent head coach.
The first official practice under Zimmer’s advisory role is set for later this week, with anticipation building for how his presence will reshape the team’s 2025 campaign.
