According to sources close to the team, Rivers informed Bucks ownership, including co-owners Wes Edens and Marc Lasry, of his decision in a private meeting at Fiserv Forum earlier this afternoon. The Bucks have yet to release an official statement, but insiders say the organization was “caught off guard” by the timing.
“I’ve given this team everything I had,” Rivers allegedly wrote in his resignation letter. “After much thought and prayer, I believe it’s time to pass the baton and allow new leadership to guide this talented roster forward.”
 Why Now?
Rivers, who took over midway through the 2023–2024 season following the firing of Adrian Griffin, led the team through an inconsistent campaign marked by injuries to star players Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton. Despite high expectations, the Bucks were eliminated in the second round of the 2025 playoffs, raising questions about the team’s direction.
Rumors have swirled in recent weeks that Rivers was being courted by the NBA’s upcoming expansion team in Seattle — though no official confirmation has been made regarding his next destination.
 Front Office Reacts
A high-ranking Bucks official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “This wasn’t expected. We were preparing for summer workouts and preseason plans. Coach Rivers stepping down now changes everything.”
Assistant coach Charles Lee is expected to step in as interim head coach while the front office conducts a thorough search for a permanent replacement.
 Rivers’ Bucks Record:
- Playoff Appearances: 1
- Notable Accomplishment: NBA In-Season Tournament Finalist
While Rivers has not confirmed his next move, NBA insiders suggest he may already be in talks to join the rumored Seattle expansion franchise set to launch in 2026. Others believe he may return to broadcasting or even explore a front office role elsewhere in the league.
