The Winnipeg Jets and their passionate fanbase are flying high today, as head coach Scott Arniel officially announced that star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has been named the new captain of the team — making NHL history in the process.
In a bold and emotional move, Hellebuyck becomes one of the very few goaltenders in NHL history to be given the captaincy — a role traditionally held by skaters, due to in-game communication rules. However, Arniel and Jets management made it clear: leadership isn’t about position — it’s about presence.
“Connor is the backbone of this team,” said Arniel. “He leads with passion, consistency, and drive. His voice matters. His actions matter. And we believe he’s the right man to lead this group into the future.”

Hellebuyck, 32, has long been the soul of the Winnipeg Jets. The 2020 Vezina Trophy winner has earned multiple All-Star appearances and recently signed a long-term extension, cementing his status as a franchise cornerstone.
“It’s an honour I never expected, but one I’m proud to accept,” said Hellebuyck. “This city, this team, these fans — they mean everything to me. I’m here to win. I’m here to lead.”
While NHL rules prevent goaltenders from wearing the “C” on their jerseys during games, Hellebuyck will carry out all captaincy responsibilities off the ice and in the locker room — joining the likes of legends such as Roberto Luongo and Bill Durnan, who also held leadership roles as goalies.
