“This is a dream come true,” said Padres manager Mike Shildt, surrounded by players, front office staff, and Hoffman’s family at a surprise announcement ceremony at Petco Park. “Trevor’s not just a baseball icon—he’s the beating heart of this city.”
The monumental move was kept under wraps for weeks, but rumors began swirling when Hoffman was spotted in the Padres executive suite wearing a vintage Padres jacket and holding what insiders called a “classified bullpen blueprint.”
Trevor Hoffman, who recorded 601 career saves—second only in MLB history—spent the bulk of his career in San Diego, becoming synonymous with the sound of AC/DC’s “Hells Bells” and ninth-inning domination. Now, he returns with a different mission: to lead the franchise into a new era of championship-caliber baseball.
“I bled brown and gold for years,” Hoffman said, choking up during the announcement. “Now I’m here to build a winning legacy—not just from the mound, but from the top of this organization.”
As Chief Baseball Officer, Hoffman will oversee all baseball operations, including player acquisitions, scouting strategy, analytics integration, and player development. He will also serve as a key figure in player culture and clubhouse chemistry.
The move is already making waves across Major League Baseball. Commissioner Rob Manfred released a statement calling the appointment “a perfect blend of baseball brilliance and San Diego soul.” Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn Jr. even commented:
“My dad would’ve loved this. Trevor’s return is exactly what the Padres—and this city—needed.”
The Padres also unveiled a new alternate jersey in honor of Hoffman: pitch-black with gold trim, featuring “Hells Bells” stitched above the number 51.
In true Hoffman fashion, his new office overlooks both the bullpen and the pitcher’s mound.
And if you listen closely during the next home game, don’t be surprised if those iconic bells ring again.
