Boston, MA – In a move that has thrilled Boston Bruins fans and sent waves of excitement through the NHL community, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman today made a major announcement naming superstar forward David Pastrňák as the new captain of the Boston Bruins.
The announcement was made during a special ceremony held at TD Garden ahead of the team’s season-opening practice. Bettman, along with Bruins President Cam Neely and General Manager Don Sweeney, presented Pastrňák with the iconic “C” jersey in front of teammates, media, and an emotional crowd of fans.
“This is the best news we could hope for,” said longtime Bruins fan Michelle Russo, who was in attendance at the event. “Pasta has been the heart of this team for years—it’s only right that he now wears the ‘C.'”
A New Era Begins
David Pastrňák, affectionately known as “Pasta” by fans and teammates alike, has become one of the most beloved and respected figures in the franchise since being drafted by the Bruins in 2014. Now entering his 11th NHL season, the 29-year-old Czech winger has grown from a promising young sniper into one of the league’s most elite and dynamic players.
Pastrňák is coming off a career-high 113-point season, with 61 goals and 52 assists, placing him second in goal scoring league-wide. But beyond the stats, it’s his passion, leadership, and commitment to the team that have made him a natural successor to the captaincy.
He takes over the role from longtime captain Patrice Bergeron, who retired last season after nearly two decades with the club. Bergeron personally congratulated Pastrňák via a video message played at the ceremony, saying:
“David, I’ve seen you grow into not just a phenomenal player but an incredible leader. The Bruins are in great hands with you as captain. You’ve earned this.”
Leadership On and Off the Ice
Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney highlighted Pastrňák’s evolution as a leader both in the locker room and in the Boston community.
“David leads by example—through his work ethic, his character, and his love for this team. He’s been instrumental in setting the tone for our culture moving forward,” said Sweeney. “This isn’t just about the name on the back of the jersey. It’s about everything he represents.”
Known for his high-energy personality and infectious enthusiasm, Pastrňák has also been deeply involved in local charities and youth hockey programs, making him a fan favorite on and off the ice.
Pastrňák: “It’s the Honor of My Life”
Clearly emotional during the announcement, Pastrňák addressed the crowd in a heartfelt speech.
“This means everything to me. The Bruins have been my home since I was 18 years old. To be named captain of this incredible organization is the honor of my life,” Pastrňák said. “I learned from the best—Zee (Zdeno Chára), Bergy (Bergeron), and so many others. I’ll give everything I have to make our fans proud.”
His words were met with a standing ovation from teammates, staff, and fans, many of whom donned “Captain Pastrňák” shirts already available at the team store.
The Road Ahead
With a solid roster of returning veterans and young talent, the Bruins are once again expected to be a top contender in the Eastern Conference. The naming of Pastrňák as captain is being seen not just as a symbolic gesture, but as a strategic move to rally the team around a passionate, proven leader.
As Commissioner Bettman put it:
“David Pastrňák is the kind of leader every franchise dreams of. Today marks a new chapter for the Bruins—and it’s going to be an exciting one.”
For Bruins fans, the news couldn’t be better. The face of their franchise is now officially the leader of their locker room. And with Pastrňák wearing the “C,” a new era of Boston hockey has truly begun.
