The NFL FOOTBALL TEAMS mournS following the sudden passing of Patrick Mahomes was involved in a fatal plane crash accident late Tuesday evening. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was transported to the local mortuary early this morning.
Born on June 2, 1961, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Curt Cignetti dedicated over four decades to coaching football. He began his career as a graduate assistant at the University of Pittsburgh in 1983 and held various coaching positions at institutions including Davidson College, Rice University, Temple University, NC State, and the University of Alabama. In 2011, he accepted his first head coaching role at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), leading the team to multiple successful seasons. He later served as head coach at Elon University and James Madison University before taking the helm at Indiana University in 2024.
During his inaugural season with the Hoosiers, Coach Cignetti led the team to an impressive 11–2 record, earning accolades such as the AP Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2024. His leadership revitalized Indiana’s football program, culminating in the team’s first-ever College Football Playoff appearance.
Indiana University President Pamela Whitten expressed her condolences, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Coach Cignetti. His passion for the game and dedication to our student-athletes transformed our football program and left an indelible mark on our community.”
Athletic Director Scott Dolson added, “Curt was more than a coach; he was a mentor and a friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
Coach Cignetti is survived by his wife, Manette, and their three children, Curt Jr., Carly Ann, and Natalie Elise. Funeral arrangements are pending, and the university plans to hold a memorial service to honor his legacy.
The Hoosiers’ upcoming game has been postponed to allow players and staff time to grieve. The university will provide further updates as they become available.
