South Carolina Mayor killed in car crash and the cause of his death has been

In a tragic sequence of events, McColl Mayor George Garner II, 49, died in a car crash on November 26, 2024, just days after the entire McColl Police Department resigned. The incident occurred around 2:40 p.m. on Highway 34 in Mechanicsville, South Carolina. Mayor Garner’s 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe collided head-on with an 18-wheeler while he was being pursued by a Marlboro County sheriff’s deputy. According to Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee, the pursuit was not due to any legal violations but was conducted to protect Mayor Garner’s well-being.

This fatal accident came just five days after McColl Police Chief Bob Hale and his five officers resigned, citing harassment from a council member and a hostile work environment. Chief Hale stated that continuous harassment and personal attacks had created a toxic atmosphere, hindering the department’s functionality. He also mentioned that necessary funds and resources were withheld, exacerbating the situation.

In response to the resignations, Mayor Garner expressed regret over the departures but committed to hiring new officers to ensure the town’s safety. He acknowledged the difficult situation and vowed to continue serving the community.

Following Mayor Garner’s death, Mayor Pro Tempore Brian Blue assumed mayoral duties, assuring residents of continued leadership and support during this challenging time. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, and a funeral service for Mayor Garner was scheduled for December 3 at McColl Church of God.
