The National Rugby League (NRL) has taken a significant step in addressing the alleged referee abuse incident involving Mark Bouris in Las Vegas, filing a lawsuit against the businessman and rugby league identity.
The lawsuit, which was filed in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, alleges that Bouris engaged in “disgraceful and unacceptable behavior” towards a referee during a rugby league match in Las Vegas.
The incident, which occurred several weeks ago, sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from the rugby league community, with many calling for Bouris to be held accountable for his actions.
The NRL has taken a strong stance against referee abuse and has implemented various measures to protect match officials. The lawsuit against Bouris is seen as a further demonstration of the NRL’s commitment to addressing this issue.
“We take the safety and well-being of our match officials extremely seriously,” said NRL Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Abdo. “The behavior exhibited by Mark Bouris was completely unacceptable and we will not tolerate it.”
The lawsuit seeks damages and costs, as well as a permanent injunction restraining Bouris from engaging in any further behavior that could be considered abusive or threatening towards match officials.
Bouris has yet to comment publicly on the lawsuit, but it is understood that he intends to defend the action.
The case is expected to be heard in the coming months, with the NRL confident that it has a strong case against Bouris.
The lawsuit against Bouris sends a strong message that referee abuse will not be tolerated in rugby league, and that those who engage in such behavior will be held accountable.
