In a tragic development sending shockwaves through both the UK and U.S. basketball communities, Richard Bowen, head coach of the Castle Bromwich Lions Youth Basketball Club in Birmingham, England, was found dead at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area on Tuesday morning, according to U.S. authorities.

Bowen, 43, had been visiting the Las Vegas area for a youth sports leadership summit and was reported missing late Monday evening by colleagues after failing to return to his hotel.

🕵️ Discovery and Investigation

The Clark County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Bowen’s body was discovered near the Calico Tanks Trail, a popular hiking area within Red Rock Canyon. His personal belongings, including identification and a phone, were found nearby.

Initial findings indicate no signs of foul play, but investigators have not yet ruled out any possibilities. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday, and the cause of death has not been officially released, though dehydration, heat exhaustion, or an accidental fall are among early theories.

“This is a heartbreaking loss,” said Sheriff Paul Ramirez during a press conference. “Mr. Bowen appeared to be hiking alone. Emergency services responded immediately after hikers reported an unresponsive individual around 7:30 AM.”

🏀 A Devoted Coach and Mentor

Richard Bowen had served as head coach of the Castle Bromwich Lions for over 12 years, helping transform the once-small club into one of the Midlands’ most respected youth basketball programs. Known for his emphasis on character, academics, and discipline, he impacted the lives of hundreds of young athletes across the UK.

“Coach Bowen was more than a coach,” said club director Julie Warren. “He was a mentor, a father figure, and a voice of encouragement for so many kids who needed it. This loss is devastating.”
