In a historic performance at the WM Phoenix Open, Thomas Detry secured his first PGA Tour victory, becoming the first Belgian to win on the tour. Detry’s final round of 6-under 65 at TPC Scottsdale culminated in a commanding seven-shot lead, finishing at 24-under-par 260.
Detry entered the final day with a five-stroke advantage and maintained his lead despite challenges from notable competitors. American golfers Michael Kim and Daniel Berger tied for second place at 17-under, while Jordan Spieth finished fourth at 16-under.
A pivotal moment occurred on the par-5 15th hole, where Berger’s birdie narrowed Detry’s lead to two strokes. Detry responded with his own birdie and followed up with a near-ace on the par-3 16th, leaving himself a tap-in birdie. He continued his momentum with birdies on the 17th and 18th holes, securing his victory.
Reflecting on his win, Detry said, “It’s incredible, it’s what dreams are made of. Honestly, that last walk on the last hole was incredible.”
This victory not only marks a personal milestone for Detry but also enhances his prospects for selection in Team Europe’s Ryder Cup squad. His win follows recent European successes, including Rory McIlroy’s victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Sepp Straka’s win at the American Express.
Detry’s triumph at the WM Phoenix Open signifies a significant achievement in his career and a historic moment for Belgian golf.
