In a tragic and fast-developing story, a massive fire has burned down a major staff facility connected to the South Carolina Athletic Department, resulting in a devastating loss of life. Emergency officials have confirmed multiple fatalities, including both department personnel and residents from nearby homes.
The fire broke out early this morning around 3:15 AM at a building located near the University of South Carolina’s athletic support campus. The facility, which housed offices, equipment storage, and residential quarters for several staff members, was quickly engulfed in flames that spread to neighboring properties before fire crews could contain the blaze.
Among those confirmed lost are several athletic staffers and local community members — including the Duval family, longtime neighbors known for their close relationship with the university. Their home, located adjacent to the facility, was completely destroyed in the fire. At least 7 people are confirmed dead, with dozens more injured or unaccounted for.
“We are heartbroken,” said South Carolina Athletics Director Ray Tanner in a brief statement. “This isn’t just a tragedy for Gamecock athletics — it’s a tragedy for our entire Columbia community. Our thoughts and prayers are with every family affected by this horrific event.”
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud boom before the flames erupted. Authorities are currently investigating the cause, with early speculation pointing to a possible electrical malfunction or gas-related explosion. The State Fire Marshal and ATF are on-site, along with local and campus police.
Multiple structures in the area sustained damage, and nearby dorms and athletic facilities were evacuated as a precaution. Classes and athletic activities have been suspended indefinitely.
Governor Henry McMaster has issued a statement of support and is expected to visit the site later today.
“South Carolina mourns this unimaginable loss. We will do everything in our power to support the university and all those impacted.”
A family reunification center has been set up at the Colonial Life Arena, and emergency hotlines have been opened for those seeking information about loved ones.
