In a surprising decision, the University of South Carolina has announced the firing of Dawn Staley, the head coach of the women’s basketball team, citing her inability to maintain the program’s high standards. This move follows a series of disappointing results, including the recent loss to UConn in the 2025 NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship.
Staley’s contract, which was renewed earlier this year in a landmark deal, has been terminated effective immediately. The university expressed concern over the team’s recent struggles and challenges in recruiting top talent, which have contributed to the decision.
While the university has yet to name a permanent replacement, assistant coach Monte Lee will step in as interim head coach during the search for new leadership.
