The Purdue Boilermakers have been hit with unexpected news today as assistant coach Barry Odom has stepped away from the team after testing positive for COVID-19. The announcement came just minutes ago from Purdue Athletics, sending ripples through the Boilermakers’ community as the team enters a crucial point in its season.

According to school officials, Odom’s test was confirmed earlier this morning during routine medical checks. Reports indicate that he is experiencing only mild symptoms, but in compliance with NCAA and health protocols, he will remain in isolation until cleared to return.
In his absence, Paul Lusk will step in to assume coaching responsibilities. Lusk, a former Purdue player and longtime member of the Boilermakers’ coaching staff, brings a wealth of experience and familiarity with the program. Known for his player development skills and deep ties to the Purdue basketball culture, Lusk is expected to keep the team steady while Odom recovers.
In a statement released by the university, Purdue Athletics emphasized:
“Coach Odom’s health is our top priority. We are confident that Paul Lusk’s leadership and experience will ensure a seamless transition during this temporary period. We look forward to Coach Odom’s safe and healthy return.”
Players also rallied behind Odom, with forward Trey Kaufman-Renn posting on social media: “Prayers up for Coach Odom. Can’t wait to see you back on the sidelines soon.”
The timing of the announcement comes as the Boilermakers prepare for a critical stretch of games in the Big Ten, with conference standings and tournament seeding on the line. All eyes will now turn to Paul Lusk as he takes the reins and guides the team through this transitional phase.
Odom, meanwhile, is expected to remain in communication with the staff virtually while focusing on his recovery. His return to the sidelines will depend on clearance from both medical staff and NCAA health protocols.
