In a recent development that has sent ripples through the NBA community, Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss confirmed that persistent grievances from star player Anthony Davis played a significant role in his departure from the team. This revelation sheds light on the intricate and often tumultuous nature of NBA team dynamics and decision-making processes.
Anthony Davis, a cornerstone of the Lakers’ 2020 championship run, had been vocal about his dissatisfaction with his role and the team’s direction. In November 2024, Davis expressed his frustration, stating, “We’re just two different teams right now. One game, we’re this team that showcases to be one of the better teams in the league. Then the next, we’re this team who… I don’t even know who we are. So, we’ve just got to be better.”
These consistent complaints culminated in a blockbuster trade that sent Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka Dončić. Buss elaborated on the situation, noting that Davis’s unhappiness with his playing position was a driving factor behind the trade. She remarked, “Anthony Davis was complaining about where he was being played and he wasn’t happy. So I think this was a positive for both teams. They got what they were looking for; we got what we were looking for.”
The negotiations, which began in mid-January 2025, were kept under tight wraps to prevent any disruptions to team morale and performance. Buss emphasized the importance of confidentiality during such high-stakes discussions, stating, “What was really important was Rob Pelinka, the general manager, and I, we did not want any part of it to leak out because it’s very disruptive to a team that’s trying to focus on getting better.”
This situation underscores the complex and often messy business side of the NBA, where internal team dynamics, player satisfaction, and strategic decisions intersect. Buss highlighted the influence of industry insiders and media relationships on the proliferation of rumors, explaining, “You realize in our business that a lot of the rumors are planted by people in the industry who are trying to curry favor with the media. There’s kind of this ‘write good things about me as general manager and I’ll feed you my inside information. Then we both win.'”
Reflecting on the trade, Buss expressed confidence that her late father, Dr. Jerry Buss, would have approved of the decisive move. Drawing a parallel to his poker-playing philosophy, she recalled, “My dad was a really great poker player, and he used to try to teach me poker, take me to the tables. I finally said, ‘Dad, why are you making me do this? I don’t like it, I don’t want to play poker.’ And he goes, ‘I’m just trying … .'”
The acquisition of Luka Dončić marks a new chapter for the Lakers, aiming to build a lasting championship culture in Los Angeles.
