In a heartfelt and unexpected announcement earlier today, Mike White, head coach of the University of Georgia Bulldogs men’s basketball team, addressed the Georgia Athletic Association and the greater Bulldog community with a personal message that is sending ripples throughout college basketball.
Coach White, known for his disciplined coaching style and unwavering commitment to his players, revealed that he would be stepping away from his role temporarily to focus on his family following a health concern involving his wife, Kira White.
“My first responsibility has always been to my family,” Coach White shared in his statement. “Kira has been my rock through every season, every game, and every challenge. Now, she needs me by her side more than ever. This is a decision made with a heavy heart, but it’s one I know is right.”
While Coach White made it clear that he is not resigning, he will be taking an indefinite leave of absence to support Kira during her treatment and recovery. The university has expressed full support of his decision.
Josh Brooks, Georgia’s athletic director, responded to the news with warmth and understanding:
“Mike White is more than a coach—he’s a leader, a mentor, and a man of deep integrity. Our thoughts and prayers are with the White family. We fully support Mike as he takes this time to be where he’s needed most.”
Assistant Coach Erik Pastrana is expected to assume interim head coaching responsibilities during White’s absence. Players have been informed, and several have already expressed their support publicly, including team captain Malik Reynolds:
“Coach White has always had our backs on and off the court. Now it’s our turn to have his.”
While the future of the season remains uncertain, one thing is clear: the Bulldog family stands united behind Coach White and his wife.
