According to sources close to the organization, the decision came after a heated internal meeting late Tuesday night, following the Oilers’ disappointing loss to the Calgary Flames. Despite guiding the team to a strong playoff run last year, management is said to have “lost confidence” in Knoblauch’s ability to push the roster to the next level.
“It’s shocking — nobody saw this coming,” one insider revealed. “The players were blindsided. McDavid was visibly frustrated when the news broke.”
Rumors are already swirling about potential replacements, with Jay Woodcroft’s name surprisingly resurfacing, as well as Todd Nelson and even Gerard Gallant being mentioned as possible candidates.
The Oilers organization has yet to release an official statement, but social media has exploded with reactions from fans — some demanding answers, others defending Knoblauch’s record.
