A massive fire broke out late Sunday night near the Tampa Bay Rays’ home stadium, engulfing and completely destroying the area’s largest and most popular restaurant, Outback Marina Grill, a hotspot for fans and tourists alike. The blaze resulted in a tragic loss of life and property, with at least 16 people confirmed dead, 27 injured, and multiple others still unaccounted for as of Monday morning.
The restaurant, located just two blocks from Tropicana Field, had been packed with families, baseball fans, and staff following a Rays home game. The fire is believed to have started around 9:30 p.m., with witnesses reporting a sudden explosion in the kitchen area that quickly spread through the building.
Horror Unfolds in Minutes
Survivors described the terrifying moments as flames erupted and thick smoke filled the air.
“There was a loud bang and then everything went black,” said Terrence Brown, a diner who managed to escape. “We were trying to help people get out — it was chaos, total chaos.”
Dozens of emergency crews responded, with firefighters battling the flames for over four hours. The building collapsed shortly after midnight, leaving behind charred debris and shattered glass. Several nearby businesses sustained damage, and surrounding streets remain closed.
A Community Mourns
Officials have confirmed that many of the deceased were restaurant staff and patrons celebrating birthday parties and post-game gatherings. Among the victims were two children, a beloved local chef, and a retired Rays stadium announcer, whose identities have not yet been formally released.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed condolences and called for an immediate investigation into the incident. “This is a heartbreaking tragedy not only for Tampa Bay but for the entire state. We stand with the families in mourning.”
The Tampa Bay Rays organization also issued a statement:
“Our hearts are broken over the loss of life and the devastation caused by last night’s fire. This community is like family, and we grieve with all who were affected.”
Investigation and Possible Cause
While the exact cause is still under investigation, fire marshals suspect a grease fire or gas leak may have triggered the initial explosion. The restaurant’s inspection records were reportedly up to date, but officials have not ruled out negligence or faulty equipment.
Search and recovery operations continue, with cadaver dogs and drones being used to search through the wreckage for missing persons.
Support and Recovery
A city-wide day of mourning has been declared, and local charities have set up emergency support funds to assist families of the victims and displaced workers. Blood banks are requesting urgent donations due to the high number of injured survivors needing care.
The Outback Marina Grill had been a Tampa Bay landmark for over 20 years and was known for its large waterfront patio, live music, and game-day events. The loss of this cultural hub is being felt deeply across the city.
