Nathan Cleary, captain of the Penrith Panthers, has opened up about the touching story behind his relationship with Australian football star Mary Fowler. Known for his calm leadership on the field and intense focus on rugby league, Cleary surprised fans with a heartfelt confession about how their relationship began and how it has grown over time.
Speaking candidly during a recent interview, Cleary admitted that when he first met Fowler, romance was the last thing on his mind.
“When I first met Mary Fowler, I’ll admit she wasn’t what I expected,” he said with a laugh. “At that time my mind was fully on footy. I was focused on training, preparing for games, and leading the team. I really wasn’t looking for anything else.”
As the leader of one of the most successful clubs in the National Rugby League, Cleary’s schedule is packed with responsibilities. Between intense training sessions, match preparation, and the pressure of captaincy, he admits his life revolves heavily around the sport.
But meeting Fowler changed that perspective.
“But Mary was different,” Cleary continued. “She had this spark about her. She was confident, full of energy, and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. That’s something I really admired about her straight away.”
At first, Cleary said he wasn’t sure how the relationship would develop. With both athletes competing at the highest levels in their respective sports, time together was often limited. However, the more they spoke and spent time together, the more he realized how special she truly was.
“The more I got to know her, the more I realized how incredible she is,” he explained. “She’s passionate about what she does, and she understands the dedication that sport requires.”
Fowler, who plays professionally for Manchester City Women and represents the Australia women’s national soccer team, shares a similar competitive mindset with Cleary. According to him, that mutual understanding has helped strengthen their bond.
“Now she’s one of the biggest sources of support in my life,” Cleary said. “She knows the ups and downs that come with professional sport, and she’s always there to encourage me.”
Fans of both athletes have celebrated the relationship, often describing them as one of sport’s most inspiring couples. With both continuing to excel in their careers, Cleary says having Fowler by his side has given him even more motivation.
“In the end,” he added, “sometimes the best things in life happen when you’re not even looking for them.”
