Recent reports have confirmed that Angie Stone, the acclaimed neo-soul and R&B singer-songwriter, has tragically passed away at the age of 63 following a car accident in Alabama.
Born in 1961 in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone’s musical journey began with her involvement in the gospel quartet scene during her youth. She gained prominence as a member of the pioneering hip-hop trio, The Sequence, in the late 1970s. The group made history with their 1979 single “Funk You Up,” becoming the first all-female hip-hop group to chart.
After The Sequence disbanded in 1984, Stone continued her musical pursuits, working as a backup performer and later forming the R&B trio Vertical Hold. In 1999, she launched her solo career with the album “Black Diamond,” which achieved gold certification and solidified her place in the neo-soul genre. Over the years, Stone released a total of 10 studio albums, earning three Grammy nominations and collaborating with artists such as D’Angelo and Erykah Badu.
Beyond her music career, Stone ventured into acting, appearing in films and television shows, including a role in the series “Girlfriends.” Her contributions to music and her pioneering role in hip-hop and R&B have left an indelible mark on the industry.
Stone is survived by her daughter, Diamond, her son, Michael, and two grandchildren. Fans and fellow artists have been paying tribute to her legacy, reflecting on her influence and the timeless quality of her music.
