GATORS QB Dj Lagway overcomes “bad football” to take home MVP honors in Gators’ Gasparilla Bowl win.
In a thrilling matchup that saw the Florida Gators emerge victorious, quarterback DJ Lagway overcame a sluggish start to take home MVP honors in the Gasparilla Bowl. Lagway’s impressive performance, which included 221 passing yards and two touchdowns, helped the Gators secure a 35-28 win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
Lagway’s road to MVP honors was not without its challenges, however. The sophomore quarterback struggled early on, throwing two interceptions and completing just 5 of 15 passes in the first half.
“It was bad football,” Lagway said in a post-game interview. “I was pressing, trying to make plays that weren’t there. But my teammates and coaches kept believing in me, and I was able to settle down and make some plays in the second half.”
Lagway’s turnaround was nothing short of remarkable. In the second half, he completed 12 of 17 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Gators on several key drives that helped them build a commanding lead.
“DJ showed a lot of heart and resilience tonight,” said Florida head coach Billy Napier. “He faced some adversity early on, but he never gave up. He kept fighting, and his teammates fed off his energy. It was a great team effort, and DJ was a big part of it.”
