Calgary Flames forward Connor Zary has taken full responsibility for his actions during a recent game against the Vancouver Canucks, acknowledging that his retaliatory hit on defenseman Elias Pettersson was a mistake. The incident, which occurred in the first period of the Canucks’ 4-3 shootout victory on March 12, 2025, led to a two-game suspension for Zary.
The sequence began when Pettersson delivered a clean, open-ice hit on Flames center Nazem Kadri as he entered the Canucks’ zone. In response, Zary sought retribution by delivering a high elbow to Pettersson’s head, resulting in a minor penalty for interference. Pettersson briefly returned to the game but did not play beyond the first period.
The NHL Department of Player Safety reviewed the play and issued a two-game suspension to Zary for elbowing. In their explanation, they noted that Zary “sees a teammate take a hard but legal check, and responds intentionally in retribution by delivering a hit with his extended elbow that makes significant head contact.”
Reflecting on the incident, Zary expressed remorse, stating, “I made a mistake. My actions were unacceptable, and I take full responsibility.” He emphasized the importance of playing within the rules and ensuring the safety of fellow players.
Flames head coach Ryan Huska defended Zary’s intent, saying, “I love that Connor went in and stood up for a teammate.” He added that Zary is not known for such plays and doesn’t expect him to be in a similar situation again.
Zary, 23, has been a significant contributor to the Flames this season, recording 12 goals and 12 assists in 49 games. This suspension marks the first of his NHL career. He will forfeit $8,993 in salary and is eligible to return on March 18 against the New York Rangers.
The Flames currently hold a precarious position in the playoff race, tied with the Canucks at 71 points. Zary’s absence, coupled with potential injuries to other key players, could impact the team’s performance in upcoming critical games.
This incident underscores the fine line players must navigate between defending teammates and adhering to the league’s standards for safe play. Zary’s acknowledgment of his mistake serves as a reminder of the responsibilities players bear in maintaining the integrity and safety of the game.
