A New Kind of Home Run
Griffey, whose swing once electrified crowds and filled stadiums with cheers, is now channeling that same energy into a mission of compassion and connection. His new campaign, titled “Safe Steps Seattle,” aims to provide essential resources, including temporary shelter, meals, hygiene supplies, mental health support, and job training for people experiencing homelessness. But more than that, the initiative is designed to challenge the stigma and stereotypes often associated with homelessness.
“This city gave me everything,” Griffey said at a press conference. “It’s time to give back in a way that brings people together—not just with money, but with respect, dignity, and support. These are our neighbors.”
The Power of Visibility
Griffey’s involvement is already making waves. His reputation, both on and off the field, lends unprecedented visibility to an issue that often exists in the shadows. His initiative partners with local nonprofits, shelters, healthcare providers, and city officials to create a long-term, sustainable framework for support.
As part of the launch, Griffey visited a downtown shelter, helping serve meals and listening to stories from residents. His presence was met with tears, smiles, and a sense of renewed hope.
“To have someone like Ken Griffey Jr. show up and really listen—that means the world,” said Andrea Lopez, a shelter manager at Harbor Hope. “People felt seen.”
More Than Charity—It’s Community
Griffey emphasized that this isn’t just a charitable gesture—it’s a movement rooted in community spirit. In addition to direct services, “Safe Steps Seattle” will include a city-wide education and awareness campaign, with billboards, school programs, and public events focused on shifting public perception around homelessness.
He’s also pledging a multi-million-dollar personal donation and rallying other athletes, entertainers, and businesses to do the same. Early supporters include former Mariners teammates and Seattle Seahawks players, many of whom have already pledged contributions and volunteer hours.
A Legacy Beyond Baseball
Ken Griffey Jr. has always been more than a sports icon. From his advocacy for youth development to his work promoting racial equity in Major League Baseball, Griffey has consistently used his platform to push for positive change.
With this bold new initiative, he’s expanding his legacy in a way that transcends the ballpark—and touches lives where help is needed most.
