In a recent interview, Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith opened up about his deep and enduring friendship with former Alabama teammate, Henry Ruggs III. The two shared a special bond during their time together at the University of Alabama, and Smith reflected on how their connection has remained strong despite the challenges that have unfolded in Ruggs’ life.
Smith and Ruggs were key figures in Alabama’s wide receiver corps, with Smith earning the prestigious 2020 Heisman Trophy and Ruggs being drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the first round of the 2020 
NFL Draft. Their on-field chemistry was undeniable, with both players making pivotal contributions to Alabama’s offensive success.
But it was off the field where their bond truly grew. “We were always pushing each other to be better, both on and off the field,” Smith shared. “We always had each other’s backs, and that bond is something I’ll always carry with me.”
However, Ruggs’ promising NFL career took a tragic turn in 2021, when he was involved in a fatal car crash that led to legal charges and ultimately derailed his career. Despite the fallout, Smith remains a strong supporter of Ruggs, often speaking about the pain of seeing his friend face such difficulties.
“I know Henry as a person,” Smith said. “He’s a great guy, and what happened is not a reflection of who he is. It’s just really tough, but I’ll always be here for him, just like I was when we were teammates.”
Smith acknowledged the pain of seeing his friend go through such a life-altering situation, but emphasized that their bond runs deep. “It’s not just about football. It’s about being there for each other through the tough times, no matter what. That’s what true friendship is.”
The Eagles star also shared how he continues to keep in touch with Ruggs, offering words of encouragement during his difficult moments. “We don’t talk as much as we used to, but every now and then we check in. I want him to know that he’s not alone in this, and he’ll always have my support.”
As DeVonta Smith’s NFL career continues to rise, it’s clear that the lessons of loyalty and camaraderie he learned from his time with Ruggs are among the most important in his life. “We’ll always be brothers, no matter what,” Smith said, reaffirming his commitment to his friend, who remains a deeply personal part of his journey.
