ESPN has confirmed that the Geelong Cats have formally approved a $175.6 million stadium renovation project, with construction slated to be completed ahead of the 2027 AFL season. The ambitious redevelopment aims to modernize Kardinia Park, enhance fan experience, and future-proof the venue for major national and international sporting events.
According to club officials, the project will include expanded seating capacity, upgraded player facilities, improved accessibility, and cutting-edge digital infrastructure designed to transform match-day engagement. The renovation is expected to generate hundreds of local jobs and deliver a significant economic boost to the Geelong region.
“This is a landmark investment for our club and our community,” a senior Geelong Cats executive said. “The upgraded stadium will reflect the Cats’ long-term vision and ensure our home ground remains among the best sporting venues in Australia.”
However, not everyone is convinced.
Despite widespread support from fans and local stakeholders, concerns have emerged regarding funding structures, construction timelines, and potential disruption during the renovation period. Some community groups are also questioning whether public contributions toward the project will outweigh the long-term benefits.
There are also unanswered questions about where the Cats may temporarily host key fixtures if construction phases overlap with the AFL season — a factor the league is reportedly monitoring closely.
Still, momentum appears strong, and with final planning approvals expected later this year, Geelong is positioning itself for a transformative new era.
But will the project stay on budget… and on schedule?
