A catastrophic tragedy struck Lisbon today when the private jet Champion Aircraft 7EC, registration N4737E, carrying the S.L. Benfica and Sporting CP men’s basketball teams, crashed into the iconic Torre Vasco da Gama. The incident, which occurred just before noon, has claimed the lives of 23 individuals and left 80 others injured, many of them critically.
The aircraft, a luxury jet designed for high-profile travel, had been en route to Lisbon after transporting the teams from a friendly basketball game in Madrid. Shortly before making its descent into Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport, the jet experienced severe turbulence and ultimately lost control, plummeting into the Vasco da Gama Tower, one of Lisbon’s most recognizable landmarks.
The Tragic Impact
The crash sent a massive fireball into the air, with debris falling from the tower and landing in the surrounding area. The explosion shook nearby buildings, and a large plume of smoke could be seen rising from the scene for hours. Emergency responders rushed to the location as fire crews battled the flames and search teams combed through the wreckage.
The collision caused significant structural damage to the top of the Torre Vasco da Gama, which houses several restaurants, offices, and observation decks. Miraculously, no civilians inside the tower at the time of the crash were reported to have been injured, though the building sustained extensive damage.
Victims on Board
Among the fatalities were 13 players from both basketball teams, as well as coaches, staff, and flight crew members. Key players from both teams, including Sporting CP’s captain João Soares and Benfica’s star guard Miguel Oliveira, were confirmed dead in the wreckage.
“We are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss,” said Francisco Ribeiro, president of the Portuguese Basketball Federation. “Both clubs, Benfica and Sporting CP, are pillars of Portuguese sport, and today we have lost not only athletes but friends and colleagues. This is a loss that will be deeply felt throughout the basketball community.”
Injuries and Rescue Efforts
The crash left 80 people injured, many of whom were aboard the aircraft. The injured, including members of both teams and the flight crew, were transported to local hospitals, with some suffering from severe burns and broken bones. Medical teams worked tirelessly to treat the survivors, and several are currently undergoing surgery for critical injuries.
“The rescue operations are ongoing, but it’s a difficult scene. Our primary focus is getting the injured to safety and providing the necessary care,” said Maria Silva, a spokesperson for Lisbon’s Fire Department. “The area around Torre Vasco da Gama has been evacuated, and we are working in collaboration with national authorities to handle the aftermath of this tragic event.”
Investigation and Cause of the Crash
The Portuguese Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) has launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash. While initial reports suggest the possibility of a mechanical failure or turbulence-related incident, no official cause has been determined at this time. Aviation experts are also considering the impact of a sudden atmospheric disturbance that might have contributed to the jet’s loss of control.
“We are thoroughly examining all aspects of the flight, including the aircraft’s maintenance records, flight data, and weather conditions at the time of the crash,” said JoĂŁo Ferreira, lead investigator at ANAC. “While the cause remains unknown, we are working swiftly to piece together the events leading up to this tragedy.”
Global Reactions and Tributes
The news of the crash has sent shockwaves through the global sports community. Players, coaches, and fans from around the world have expressed their condolences. Major sports figures such as LeBron James, Luka Dončić, and Kevin Durant took to social media to offer their thoughts and support for the victims and their families.
“We are all devastated by this tragedy,” said Sporting CP forward, Pedro Silva. “My heart is with everyone affected by this incident. This is more than a game, these are people, friends, and family.”
In Lisbon, thousands of fans gathered outside the Vasco da Gama Tower, leaving flowers, scarves, and basketballs in tribute to the fallen athletes. Vigils are being planned in both Lisbon and Madrid to honor the victims.
Ronaldo’s Statement and Support
Cristiano Ronaldo, who has close ties to both S.L. Benfica and Sporting CP, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of life. “Today, we mourn together,” Ronaldo wrote on social media. “These were not just athletes, but brothers and friends. My thoughts are with their families, the teams, and all those affected by this unimaginable tragedy.”
As of now, authorities are urging the public to respect the privacy of the victims’ families during this difficult time. Plans for memorial services for the victims are expected to be announced shortly.
