In an extraordinary blend of ambition, leadership, and compassion, Dani Busboom Kelly, one of the most respected names in collegiate volleyball, has set her sights on a season for the ages — and a legacy far beyond the court.

The head coach of the Louisville Cardinals volleyball team has publicly pledged to lead her team to win the Big Ten Championship, reach the NCAA Final Four, and vie for the prestigious AVCA National Coach of the Year honor, all while staying true to the values that define her leadership.

But it’s not just her competitive spirit making headlines — it’s her heart.

In a move that stunned and inspired the sports world, Busboom Kelly has also donated $3 million of her career bonuses and endorsements to charity organizations and a children’s orphanage in Eastern Kentucky, where she spent summers volunteering as a student-athlete.

“This Is Bigger Than Volleyball”

Speaking at a press conference held at the university’s training facility, Busboom Kelly explained her motivation:

“Volleyball has given me so much — mentors, teammates, purpose, and now the opportunity to impact lives far beyond the court. This season, I’m dedicating everything — every win, every practice, every moment — to our players, and to the kids in communities who need a little more hope in their lives.”

She described the donation as something she’d been planning for years, tied to her belief that success only matters when it’s shared.

“When I got my first coaching paycheck, I wrote down on a piece of paper: ‘Someday, I’ll give back $3 million.’ That note stayed in my wallet for 15 years. I think it’s time.”

On the Court: A Championship Mentality

Busboom Kelly’s bold commitment to winning the Big Ten Championship is as fierce as her dedication off the court. Since taking over the Louisville program, she has led the team to unprecedented success — including multiple Elite Eight appearances and a Final Four berth in 2021.

With a strong returning roster, top national recruits, and a culture built on accountability and excellence, her program is widely viewed as a national contender in the 2025 season.

“Our team is ready. We’ve put in the work, we’ve grown as leaders, and we believe in each other,” said senior captain Riley Thomas. “Coach Busboom Kelly gives everything she has to us — and we want to give it back in championships.”

Off the Court: $3 Million with a Mission

The charitable organizations benefiting from Busboom Kelly’s $3 million donation include:

  • Rise & Serve, a nonprofit focused on youth mentorship and education access in underserved Kentucky communities.

  • Safe Haven Home, an orphanage providing shelter, education, and emotional support for displaced children in rural Appalachia.

  • Girls Serve First, a volleyball-based leadership program for young girls across the Midwest.

All of the funds will be distributed through a new initiative called “Beyond the Baseline,” launched by Busboom Kelly to ensure that her giving continues long after her coaching career ends.

“Every child deserves to feel seen, supported, and capable of greatness — whether they’re chasing a dream in sports or just looking for a warm place to sleep,” she said.

A Role Model for the Game

Praise for Busboom Kelly’s leadership and generosity has poured in from across the volleyball world.

Karch Kiraly, head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team, called her “a model for what coaching should be — relentless in competition and unmatched in compassion.”

Fans, alumni, and players echoed that sentiment online, many sharing personal stories of how she’s changed their lives through mentorship and inspiration.

Eyes on the Prize

As the 2025 NCAA volleyball season approaches, all eyes will be on Louisville — and especially on the woman leading the charge. Whether it’s in the gym or in the community, Dani Busboom Kelly is proving that success isn’t just measured in trophies — it’s measured in lives touched.

“We’re not just going for wins this year,” she said, smiling. “We’re going for something unforgettable.”
