Blue Jays Bench Coach Issues Apology for Involvement in Astros Sign-Stealing Scandal

Toronto Blue Jays bench coach Dave Hudgens has publicly apologized for his role in the Houston Astros’ infamous sign-stealing scandal, acknowledging his part in one of Major League Baseball’s most controversial episodes in recent history.

Hudgens, who served as the Astros’ hitting coach during their 2017 World Series-winning season, released a statement this week expressing remorse over the incident that has continued to cast a shadow over MLB.

“I deeply regret the role I played during my time in Houston and apologize to the fans, the game, and everyone affected,” said Hudgens. “I should have done more to stop what was happening, and I accept responsibility for my inaction.”

The Astros’ scandal involved using a camera system to illegally steal signs from opposing teams, giving Houston hitters a significant advantage. The scheme was widely condemned after a league investigation confirmed its scope, resulting in fines, suspensions, and firings of key personnel — though no players were disciplined.

Hudgens, while not a central figure in the scandal’s execution, was part of the coaching staff during the period in question. His statement follows mounting pressure for individuals involved in the incident to publicly address their roles.

Since joining the Blue Jays in 2018, Hudgens has worked to rebuild trust and has been a respected presence in Toronto’s dugout. The organization issued a brief statement in response to his apology, acknowledging the matter.

“We are aware of Coach Hudgens’ statement and appreciate his honesty,” the team said. “We remain committed to maintaining a culture of integrity and accountability within our organization.”

Hudgens’ apology adds to the broader reckoning within baseball regarding the scandal’s long-term impact on the sport’s credibility. While some fans have called for harsher penalties or continued scrutiny, others see his statement as a step toward closure.

MLB has not indicated any plans for further discipline related to Hudgens’ involvement.
