In a monumental announcement that has electrified Badger
Nation, Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh and head coach Luke Fickell have officially confirmed that legendary coach and former athletic director Barry Alvarez will return to the program in 2025 as the Chief Football Officer.
Alvarez, who served as Wisconsin’s head coach from 1990 to 2005 and later as athletic director through 2021, is widely credited with transforming the Badgers into a Big Ten powerhouse. His return marks a new chapter in the program’s storied history, as he steps back into a leadership role designed to unify football operations, player development, and long-term program strategy.
“Barry’s vision and leadership built this program,” said McIntosh. “Having him back in the building ensures that our tradition, culture, and future direction remain aligned.”
Head coach Luke Fickell echoed those sentiments, noting that Alvarez’s presence will bring unmatched insight and stability to the Badgers’ football infrastructure.
“Coach Alvarez knows what it takes to win here,” Fickell said. “His experience and passion for Wisconsin football will be invaluable as we continue to elevate the program.”
In his new role, Alvarez will oversee football operations, mentor coaching staff, and serve as a bridge between athletics administration and the football program. Sources within the university describe the move as both symbolic and strategic — a homecoming for one of college football’s most respected figures.
Alvarez, 78, expressed gratitude and excitement about returning to the team he helped build into a national contender.
“Wisconsin is home,” Alvarez said in a brief statement. “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, but I’m even more excited about what’s ahead. This program means everything to me.”
The announcement comes at a pivotal time for the Badgers, as they continue to adjust to the expanded Big Ten landscape and heightened national competition. Alvarez’s return is expected to strengthen recruiting, alumni engagement, and the program’s broader vision heading into the 2025 season.
More details about Alvarez’s specific duties and timeline for his return will be released in the coming weeks.
