In a powerful display of community commitment, Sydney Roosters star centre/fullback Joseph Manu has invested $5.6 million to convert one of his personal properties into a fully equipped residential shelter for homeless and at-risk youth.
The redevelopment will turn the property into a modern safe-haven offering round-the-clock staff support, mental-health and counselling services, education and job-readiness programs, and dedicated community and recreation spaces. Once completed, the shelter is expected to house more than 40 young people and provide both short-term relief and long-term pathways toward stability and independence.
Manu described the project as something deeply personal.
“Growing up, I saw how easily young people can fall through the cracks,” he said. “Rugby league has given me everything. This is my chance to give something meaningful back and show our youth that they’re valued and supported.”
Roosters officials have publicly praised the initiative and indicated that the club may assist with fundraising and volunteer support as the project unfolds. Community leaders are also hailing Manu’s decision as a groundbreaking example of how professional athletes can use their success to drive long-lasting social change.
Construction is expected to begin soon, with plans for the shelter to open its doors in late 2026. Many in the community believe it could become a model for future collaborations between private donors and youth-support organisations.
