July 25, 2024 (Washington, DC) — Right-hander Dylan Cease etched his name deeper into Padres lore by firing a no-hitter — the second in franchise history — and manager Mike Shildt was caught off-guard when the announcement hit the press box.

On July 25, 2024, Cease dominated Washington, DC, silencing the Nationals 3–0 with nine strikeouts and three walks over 114 pitches to record the Padres’ second-ever no-no. He navigated a rain delay, fired 39 fastballs averaging 98.3 mph, burned 60 sliders, and induced 12 groundouts.

As he powered through the eighth, Cease calmly convinced Shildt to let him continue:

“I feel great … if we get through the next one at like 105 … thankfully they let me talk him into it and here we are.”

Shildt initially expected to pull Cease after seven innings, but stayed his hand — urged on by both Cease and veteran ace Joe Musgrove.

“Joe is like, ‘His stuff is pretty good … well, he’s thrown one [no-hitter]’… we let him ride.”

On the mound with 94 pitches, Cease and Shildt met:

Shildt’s post‑game tone was one of pride. He celebrated not only Cease’s pitch performance but the entire team’s role. His surprise at the unexpected announcement turned quickly to admiration for Cease’s conviction and Musgrove’s timely advice.

Fans echoed that sentiment, describing Shildt as “a good coach” and celebrating his willingness to give Cease the chance to seal history
