In a remarkable act of generosity and social responsibility, Penrith Panthers halfback and NRL superstar Nathan Cleary has made headlines today with the announcement that he is investing a staggering $67.2 million to transform one of his luxury properties into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.
The move comes as a surprise to many, but has been widely praised by fans, community leaders, and fellow athletes as a bold and compassionate stand against the growing youth homelessness crisis across Australia.
A Vision Beyond the Field
Cleary, 27, has long been known for his leadership on the field, but this latest move showcases his growing commitment to causes off the field. The star halfback, who has led the Panthers to multiple premierships and earned numerous accolades throughout his career, says the decision was inspired by personal reflection and time spent volunteering with local youth outreach organizations during the offseason.
“I’ve been incredibly fortunate in my life and career,” Cleary said at a press conference earlier today. “But not everyone gets the same start. I wanted to do something that wasn’t just a donation — I wanted to build something lasting, something that gives kids a real shot at stability, support, and success.”
A Safe Haven for the Future
The shelter, named “Cleary House”, will be located on a sprawling estate previously owned by the athlete in the Blue Mountains region. The site will undergo extensive redevelopment over the next 18 months and will include:

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than 28,000 young people aged 12–24 are currently experiencing homelessness across Australia, many due to domestic violence, family breakdown, or economic hardship. Advocates say this number is likely underestimated, as many youth “couch surf” or live in unstable conditions not captured in official data.
“This is a game-changer,” said Helen McGrath, CEO of Youth Futures Australia. “We’ve seen athletes donate before, but the scale, thoughtfulness, and long-term vision of Nathan’s project is extraordinary. It’s the kind of leadership we need right now.”
Support From the NRL Community
The announcement has already garnered overwhelming support from the wider NRL community. Panthers coach Ivan Cleary, Nathan’s father, expressed pride in his son’s decision.
“He’s always had a big heart, but this… this is something else. He’s using his platform to make a real difference.”
