In a remarkable act of generosity and civic responsibility, New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson has announced a personal investment of $22.5 million to transform a historic Brooklyn mansion into a state-of-the-art shelter and resource center for homeless youth.

The newly established facility, to be named “Brunson House,” will provide housing, educational support, mental health services, job training, and mentorship programs for young people aged 16–24 who are experiencing homelessness. Located in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn, the 25,000-square-foot property will be renovated over the next 18 months, with plans to open its doors by early 2027.
A Personal Mission
Speaking at a press conference on Friday afternoon, Brunson described the initiative as a deeply personal mission inspired by stories he encountered through community outreach during his time with the Knicks.
“I’ve been incredibly blessed in my life,” Brunson said, standing beside community leaders and representatives from local nonprofit organizations. “But not everyone has the same opportunities. I met a young man last year who aged out of foster care and ended up sleeping on the subway. His story stuck with me. I wanted to do more than write a check—I wanted to build something that lasts.”
The donation is entirely self-funded and marks one of the largest known charitable contributions ever made by an active NBA player toward addressing youth homelessness.
A Multi-Purpose Facility
The Brunson House will offer temporary and transitional housing for up to 120 residents at a time, with additional space dedicated to learning labs, therapy rooms, a gymnasium, and a communal kitchen. The facility will partner with local schools, employers, and mental health providers to ensure a holistic support system.
One of the most innovative aspects of the project is its “Next Step” program, which will provide life skills coaching, GED support, college preparation, and job placement services.
“Jalen isn’t just giving these kids a place to sleep—he’s giving them a future,” said Tara Mendoza, Executive Director of NYC Youth Horizon, one of the partner organizations collaborating on the project. “His commitment goes far beyond the dollar amount. He’s been involved in the design process, spoken with youth counselors, and even taken the time to meet some of the teens who will benefit.”
Community Impact and Reactions
Local leaders have praised Brunson’s commitment, with New York City Mayor Eric Adams calling it “a game-changing moment for the city.”
“In a time when so many athletes are celebrated for what they do on the court, Jalen Brunson is showing us what leadership looks like off the court,” Mayor Adams said. “This is more than charity—it’s a model for how public figures can create lasting social impact.”
Residents of the Fort Greene neighborhood have expressed strong support for the project, especially in light of growing concerns about youth homelessness in the city. According to recent data from the NYC Department of Homeless Services, over 4,000 young people in the five boroughs are currently without stable housing.
Beyond Basketball
Brunson, 28, has emerged as a cornerstone player for the Knicks since joining the team in 2022. Known for his leadership and toughness on the court, he has also quickly become a respected voice in the locker room and the broader New York community.
