Today’s tragic event left the sports world in sadness when a huge explosion and ensuing fire partially damaged the New Orleans Saints’ stadium. Four of the team’s best all-star players died as a result of the terrible incident, according to authorities.
The surrounding region was rocked by the explosion that happened early this afternoon. Within minutes, emergency personnel arrived on the site, fighting fierce fires and evacuating surrounding buildings to protect the public. But even with their quick response, the fire took lives and seriously damaged the building.
It’s still unknown what caused the explosion. To ascertain if it was caused by an unintentional gas leak or other contributing elements, investigators are putting forth endless effort. Witnesses described a scene of confusion and sorrow when they heard a loud blast followed by rising flames consuming a portion of the stadium.
Until their families have been notified, the names of the players who unfortunately died have not yet been made public. In a statement, the Saints organization expressed their deep sadness and promised to help the victims’ families through this difficult period.
In a statement, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell described it as “a dark day for the entire NFL community.” He promised supporters that every effort would be made to identify the reason behind this tragedy and make sure it doesn’t occur again.
With players and teams from all throughout the league expressing their condolences and paying tribute to the athletes who have died, the football community has come together in solidarity. Outside the stadium, supporters have gathered and left candles, flowers, and supportive notes.
