Former NBA star and current humanitarian leader Luol Deng has once again shown that his impact extends far beyond the basketball court. In a powerful gesture of compassion and global responsibility, Deng has donated his entire $1.8 million bonus and endorsements to support charitable initiatives and homelessness support organizations across the globe.
Deng, a South Sudanese-British former professional small forward who enjoyed a successful career with teams like the Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, and Los Angeles Lakers, made the announcement during a press conference held in London on Saturday morning.
“I’ve been blessed beyond measure,” Deng said. “It’s only right that I use that blessing to uplift others — especially those who are struggling to find stability, shelter, and support. This isn’t charity. It’s responsibility.”
Focus on South Sudan and the UK
While the donation will benefit organizations internationally, Deng made clear that a significant portion of the funds will be directed toward programs in South Sudan, his birth country, and the United Kingdom, where he was raised.
In South Sudan, the donation will aid the expansion of youth empowerment centers, basketball and education academies, and shelters for displaced families impacted by years of conflict. In the UK, the funds will support mental health and job-readiness programs for the homeless population, particularly young men of color disproportionately affected by economic hardships.
A Legacy of Giving
This is not the first time Luol Deng has stepped up to serve. Since retiring from the NBA, he has devoted himself to humanitarian work, particularly through the Luol Deng Foundation, which focuses on providing opportunities for youth through sports and education.
His ongoing efforts have earned him recognition from global organizations including the UNHCR (United Nations Refugee Agency) and FIBA, which applauded his efforts to grow basketball across Africa.
“Luol has proven time and time again that being a champion is about what you do off the court,” said UNHCR spokesperson Maya Ahmed. “This donation reflects the depth of his commitment to human dignity.”
Reaction Across the Sports World
Tributes and praise poured in from players, coaches, and fans alike. Former teammates like Joakim Noah and Dwyane Wade took to social media to salute Deng, calling his act “selfless,” “inspiring,” and “a blueprint for athlete leadership.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement, calling Deng’s contribution “a remarkable act that embodies the best of what athletes can do for their communities and the world.”
The Next Step
According to the Luol Deng Foundation, the donation will immediately begin funding several initiatives. Construction has already begun on a new youth center in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, while several UK-based homelessness charities will receive grants in the coming months.
Deng ended the press conference with a message of hope:
“We all have a role to play. Whether you’re a former athlete, a fan, or a person just trying to make ends meet — kindness is powerful. Let’s use it.”
