In yet another headline Florida wasn’t expecting but also isn’t surprised by, local man Kyle “Big Kahuna” Henderson has accidentally become the official mayor of Tampa after winning a prank radio contest titled “Who Wants to Be a Mayor?”

The contest, run by 97.5 FM “The Flamingo,” was meant to be a joke promotion. Contestants answered trivia questions about city ordinances and potholes. Henderson, 31, who thought he was just playing for concert tickets and a $50 gift card to Waffle House, ended up being sworn into office Monday morning in front of a very confused city council.

“They told me to raise my right hand and repeat after them,” Henderson said, sipping an iced Monster. “I thought it was part of the bit. Next thing I know, I’ve got a desk, a key to the city, and three interns named Chad.”

City Officials Scrambling

Officials at Tampa City Hall are scrambling to undo what legal analysts are calling “the most Florida thing to ever happen in local government.”

City clerk Janice Weatherbee told reporters, “Technically, the paperwork was valid. The oath was real. His signature was witnessed by an unpaid intern. It’s airtight.”

Mayor Kahuna’s First Moves

In his first press conference as mayor, Henderson announced:

  • Every Friday is now “Flip-Flop Freedom Day” — formal footwear banned.
  • Street tacos will be subsidized by “whatever is in the emergency fund.”
  • All potholes will be filled “with positive vibes and, if that fails, pool noodles.”

He also proposed replacing the city’s official anthem with a mashup of Jimmy Buffett and Pitbull.

“I may not know zoning laws,” Mayor Kahuna admitted, “but I know how to party and I once fixed a sink, so I’m basically qualified.”

Public Reaction

Tampa residents are split.

  • “He’s doing better than the last guy and he hasn’t even done anything yet,” said one local.
  • “I just want my pothole fixed. It’s been five years,” said another, standing next to a cone that now contains a family of ducks.

The Radio Station’s Response?

Station manager Rick “DJ Loco” Martinez released a brief statement:

“We didn’t mean for this to happen. But also, this is the best ratings week we’ve ever had. Long live Mayor Kahuna.”
