In a monumental move that’s set to send shockwaves through the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers have officially announced that franchise icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson will return to the organization as Chief Basketball Officer effective immediately.
The decision comes after months of behind-the-scenes discussions, as the Mark Walter family, majority stakeholders of the Lakers since 2024, sought to reinvigorate the team’s basketball operations with a figure who embodies championship pedigree and organizational pride.
“There is no one more synonymous with Lakers greatness than Magic Johnson,” said team owner Mark Walter during a packed press conference at Crypto.com Arena. “We believe his leadership, basketball IQ, and connection to this city are exactly what this franchise needs to usher in a new era of excellence.”
Johnson, a 5-time NBA Champion and 3-time MVP, previously held executive positions with the Lakers, most notably serving as President of Basketball Operations from 2017 to 2019. His return in this newly created role signals a renewed focus on basketball fundamentals, talent development, and cultural identity.
“I’m home,” Johnson said, smiling. “This franchise made me who I am. It’s time to bring the Lakers back to the top where we belong.”
