The 23-year-old forward, known for his relentless work ethic and rising stardom, chose to celebrate his contract extension not with luxury or excess, but with a sweeping act of generosity. In a statement released Tuesday, Mathurin announced that the full amount of his bonus would be committed to education, mental health, global health access, and social justice efforts.
A major portion of the funds will go toward building schools and educational programs in underserved communities across North America and the Caribbean, aiming to empower future generations through learning. He’s also directing a significant portion to youth mental health services, particularly in urban areas where access to care is often limited or stigmatized.
Mathurin, who has spoken in the past about his Haitian roots and the importance of his cultural heritage, is funding clean water initiatives and rural healthcare in parts of Central and West Africa. Additional funds will support college scholarships for first-generation students, and provide aid to shelters for victims of domestic violence and homelessness.
> “This is about something bigger than basketball,” Mathurin said at a packed press conference at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. “I’ve been given a gift, and I believe part of that gift is the responsibility to give back—to help people who never got the chances I did.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised the move as “historic,” saying Mathurin has set “a new standard for leadership and character among athletes.”
Fellow players across the league voiced admiration. LeBron James posted, “This is how you leave a legacy. Huge respect to Bennedict. Real One.”
Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said the team was “in awe” of Mathurin’s decision, adding that his impact “will be felt well beyond the basketball court.”
In a world often driven by contracts, fame, and personal gain, Bennedict Mathurin has reminded everyone what true greatness looks like.
