In a move that has taken the NBA world by storm, the Golden State Warriors have officially announced that franchise icon and basketball visionary Don Nelson will return to the organization in 2025 as the team’s Chief Basketball Officer.
The stunning news was confirmed Friday morning by Warriors CEO Joe Lacob, accompanied by members of the Lacob family and key front office executives. The appointment marks a symbolic and strategic return for one of the most influential figures in franchise—and league—history.
“Don Nelson isn’t just part of Warriors history; he helped define it,” said Lacob during the press conference at Chase Center. “His basketball IQ, innovative mind, and deep connection to this team made the decision a no-brainer.”
A Legacy Reignited
While Nelson is best remembered as a revolutionary head coach, many fans forget that he also played as a small forward during his early NBA years, prior to his coaching career. Though his playing days were largely with the Boston Celtics, his later decades with Golden State—particularly as head coach—turned him into a cult hero and an enduring face of the franchise.
Now 85, Nelson brings decades of experience, a deep understanding of team culture, and a famously unorthodox approach to the game that still influences the modern NBA.
“I’m thrilled to be back,” Nelson said in his trademark laid-back tone. “This team has always been close to my heart, and now I get to help shape its future. Plus, I heard the wine’s still good in Napa.”
A New Role, the Nelson Way
As Chief Basketball Officer, Nelson will work closely with President of Basketball Operations Mike Dunleavy Jr., Head Coach Steve Kerr, and the Warriors’ player development and analytics departments.
His responsibilities will span player mentorship, culture-building, long-term roster strategy, and front-office advising. Known for his forward-thinking basketball philosophy, Nelson is expected to play a key role in helping the team transition into its next competitive era as it evolves post–“Splash Brothers” dynasty.
“Nelson was ahead of his time 20 years ago,” said Kerr. “Who better to help guide us into the future than someone who already saw it coming decades ago?”
Fans and Players React
The announcement triggered a flood of nostalgia on social media, with “Don Nelson” trending nationwide within minutes. Former players including Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Baron Davis all shared messages of support, admiration, and excitement for Nelson’s return.
One fan posted:
“Don Nelson back in the building? The vibes are undefeated. Let the wine flow!”
Another quipped:
“First we had ‘Nellie Ball.’ Now we get Nellie Boss.”
What’s Next?
While Nelson won’t be returning to the sidelines, his influence will undoubtedly be felt across every level of the organization. With a front office now blending past greatness with future vision, the Warriors appear poised to enter a compelling new era—guided once again by one of basketball’s most innovative minds.
