Upon signing his latest NBA contract extension — which includes a $52 million signing bonus — Curry, with Silver’s support and collaboration, has donated the entire bonus to launch a global initiative focused on youth empowerment, education access, and social justice reform.
“Basketball has given me a platform, and now I want to use it to give back in ways that truly matter,” Curry said at an emotional press conference alongside Silver at the Chase Center. “This isn’t about me. This is about creating opportunities for people who’ve never had a fair shot.”
A Groundbreaking Initiative: “The Game Beyond the Game”
The $52 million donation will fully fund “The Game Beyond the Game Foundation”, a groundbreaking joint initiative between Curry, the NBA, and global nonprofit partners. Its mission: to provide underserved youth across the U.S. and internationally with access to education, mentorship, clean water, and legal advocacy.
Key pillars of the initiative include:
-
Building and refurbishing schools in underserved communities across North America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
-
Creating tech labs and sports facilities in inner-city neighborhoods to bridge the education and digital divide.
-
Offering scholarships, mental health support, and mentorship for at-risk youth.
-
Advocating for social justice reform, with investments in legal aid organizations and community leadership programs.
Commissioner Adam Silver, visibly moved, said:
“Stephen came to us with this vision, and it was impossible not to support it. This is the embodiment of what leadership looks like — using your influence and earnings to create lasting change.”
Reactions Pour In Across the League
Stars from across the NBA quickly took to social media to show admiration and support:
-
LeBron James tweeted: “Unreal. Curry’s legacy is so much bigger than the game now. Respect, brother.”
-
Giannis Antetokounmpo added: “Changing lives. Changing the league. Salute to you, Steph.”
Even former President Barack Obama issued a statement, calling the move, “A shining example of how sports and service can come together to lift entire generations.”
Curry’s Legacy: Cemented On and Off the Court
Already regarded as the greatest shooter in NBA history and a four-time NBA champion, Curry’s philanthropic work — from funding HBCUs to feeding children through his Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation — has long shown his commitment to giving back. But this latest move, made in partnership with the NBA’s highest office, marks a new chapter in athlete activism.
