BREAKING NEWS: Former Texas A&M guard Zhuric Phelps inks a NBA Summer League deal with the Dallas Mavericks, poised to share the court with…..

Former Texas A&M standout Zhuric Phelps is taking his next step toward the NBA—and he may soon be sharing the hardwood with the

league’s newest sensation, Cooper Flagg.

Phelps has officially signed a deal to join the Dallas Mavericks’ Summer League roster, giving the electrifying guard a chance to prove himself on one of the NBA’s biggest offseason stages. The Mavericks, who selected Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, are expected to use Summer League play to begin building chemistry around their young star—and Phelps may now be part of that picture.

While Phelps began his college career at SMU, he made a significant impact after transferring to Texas A&M. Known for his aggressive on-ball defense and quick first step, he became a fan favorite in College Station. His high motor and leadership helped anchor the Aggies’ backcourt, making him a valuable piece for a Mavericks Summer League squad that will be closely watched.

“I’m just thankful for the opportunity,” Phelps said via social media. “Ready to get to work and show what I can do.”

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Cooper Flagg, the former Duke Blue Devil whose combination of size, skill, and basketball IQ led many to label him a “generational talent.” The Mavericks are planning to give Flagg significant responsibility from the jump, with head coach Jason Kidd hinting that Flagg may even be tested in a point-forward role during Summer League.

“It’s going to be uncomfortable at times,” Kidd said in a recent interview. “But that’s the goal—we want him to grow into a leader early.”

The Mavericks’ Summer League games begin July 10 in Las Vegas and will run through July 20. It’s expected that Flagg and Phelps will both see extended minutes, giving fans a first glimpse at how the young duo might complement one another.

While Flagg is seen as the centerpiece of Dallas’s rebuild, Phelps enters with something to prove. A strong showing could earn him a spot with the Mavericks’ G League affiliate—the Texas Legends—or even lead to a two-way NBA contract.

For both players, Summer League represents opportunity: for Flagg, a stage to launch his stardom; for Phelps, a chance to fight for his NBA dream.
