The message, which was confirmed by both organizations earlier today, reflects Nettles’ deep connection to the Padres organization and his excitement over the team’s current direction under Shildt’s leadership.
A Message Rooted in Respect and Hope
“San Diego gave me some of the most meaningful years of my career, and I still follow the team with pride,” Nettles wrote. “Coach Shildt has done an incredible job turning the team into a true contender again. The fight, the chemistry, the energy—this is a Padres team I believe in.”
Nettles, who played for the Padres from 1984–1987 and was part of their first World Series appearance in 1984, emphasized the importance of honoring the past while charging into the future.
“You’re not just playing for this season—you’re carrying the legacy of every player who ever wore brown and gold. And I see a team that’s worthy of doing just that.”
Coach Mike Shildt Responds: “It Means Everything”
Upon receiving the message, Padres head coach Mike Shildt spoke to the media, clearly moved:
“To hear that from Graig Nettles—a guy who helped put this franchise on the map—is humbling. We want to make guys like him proud. And if he’s watching us and believing in us, then we’re doing something right.”
Shildt went on to say that Nettles’ message was read aloud in the clubhouse before today’s practice, drawing loud cheers from players and staff.
Padres on the Rise
With Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and a deep pitching rotation, the Padres are seen as legitimate contenders in the National League this season. Nettles’ message arrives at a time when team morale is high and belief in the clubhouse is palpable.
A Bridge Between Eras
Though Graig Nettles has long since returned to his Yankees roots—serving in a front office mentorship role—his message to San Diego reaffirms a powerful truth in baseball: once a Padre, always a Padre.
“I may wear pinstripes again, but part of my baseball soul will always belong to San Diego,” Nettles added in closing.
