In a stunning and emotional homecoming that has rocked the Memphis sports world, former Memphis Tigers head coach and beloved football icon Mike Norvell has officially returned to his former team — this time as a Senior Coaching Advisor.
The announcement was made early this morning at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, where media, fans, and former players gathered in anticipation after rumors of Norvell’s return began circulating late last night.
“Once a Tiger, Always a Tiger.”
Mike Norvell, who served as Memphis’ head coach from 2016 to 2019, led the Tigers to unprecedented success, including an AAC Championship and a coveted berth in the New Year’s Six Cotton Bowl. His leadership transformed Memphis into a nationally respected program.
Now, after a tenure at Florida State, Norvell returns — not as the head coach — but in a newly created role of Senior Coaching Advisor, where he will provide leadership, strategy, and mentorship to both players and the current coaching staff.
“This is home,” Norvell said at a press conference Thursday morning. “Memphis gave me my first shot. The community, the players, the passion — it never left me. I’m here to give back and help take this program even further.”
A Boost for the Tigers
Athletic Director Laird Veatch called Norvell’s return “a momentous day for Memphis football,” emphasizing the wealth of experience, energy, and institutional knowledge Norvell brings back to the program.
“Mike is a visionary, a motivator, and a Tiger through and through,” Veatch said. “Having him back — even in an advisory role — is like adding jet fuel to our ambitions.”
Fan Reaction: Electrifying
As news broke, social media exploded with reactions ranging from nostalgic joy to future-focused optimism.
- “This is the best thing that’s happened to Memphis football in years,” tweeted @TigerPride901.
- “Norvell back in the building? We’re cooking!” said another fan on Reddit’s CFB forum.
Outside the stadium, a group of students and alumni gathered holding signs reading: “Welcome Home, Coach Norvell!” and “Memphis Never Forgets.”
